Surrounding Simonstown Dry Dock, are painted the ships crests of just about all the British Warships that have visited here. It was customary for later ships to add their own crest and to touch /freshen up these pieces of history. Our crest was added with skill from L/Sea “Geordie” Coates. I wonder if they are still maintained, I doubt it! ######- HMS Leopard's badge remains on the wall of the Simon's Town Dry Dock. Although the tradition of maintaining the badges by ships using the Selborne Graving Dock dock has largely been lost, personnel of the Simonstown Dockyard continue to maintain them. It is the docks Centenary in Nov (2010) this year and we are hoping to have all the badges completely re-painted by then, thus preserving them for a few more decades (hopefully).
Regards,
John Sutherland.

Hello, first of all let me take this oppertunity to wish you and yours a very Happy Christmas and a bright new year. I have just come across your web-site and I wish you the best of luck with it and every success. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane as they say and it brought back a lot of memories for myself.
I have down through the years to try and make contact with some of my old mate's that I served with but to no avail so for that reason alone I was glad to browse your webs-site.
You see,I too served onboard H.M.S. Leopard on her first comm.to the South Atlantic, I joined Leopard, straight from completion of training at Ralaigh,a sprog if you like,in January 1959,just in time for the work-up which you described so aptly and then the farewell's on our departure for the South Atlantic.
I think I have some old photo's of a banyan of us Stoker's yomping steaks in Mar Del Plata and in the Casino's,if I can find them I will try and have them enhanced and maybe send them on to you.
My name is Pat Herbert and I served for the duration of Leopards first commission as an M.E.1 (STOKER).
Well Rod, thanks again for the great read and the memories.
I will try to get in touch again after the Holidays so until then, have a nice peaceful CHRISTMAS and Happy New Year.
