Hi, dont know if anyone can help me but my Grandad served on the HMS Ariadne during the second world war, sadly he passed away when i was young and I never got the opportunity to hear his stories. I really would like to get hold of a picture of the ship but i have no idea where to start. Does anyone have any ideas? I would be extremely grateful.

Hi Andy

Rob the Admin of the site is going to pass my email on to you........

He not been given long so we have brought him home, i have just been sitting with him for the last few hours looking over his photo album.........

He told me about "Operation Kingdom", being at action stations while going up the fjords, then searching buildings that the germans had been using and finding potatoes hidden in desk drawers, apparantly they were starving......

Being at pearl harbour to train on a new gun sight, the Americans were very serious when on watch at night, when it came to their turn they were turning up drunk and late......the got into bother for that..

Dropping off 250 rangers on an island 3 days before leytr gulf, all but 2 were killed.....

He was mentioned in despatches after saving a mates life who fell overboard in Australia, he got hit by the screws on a ferry.....my grandad jumped in after him......

One day i`m going to have to write it all down..........

all the best

Hi Shaun..........My grandad was Anthony Hynam............strangly enough I always knew him as "jack" but that stemmed from his time with the railway.
He also joined Ariadne in 1943 as a volunteer and served with her until he was demobbed. Sadly he passed away in 1992 after a fight against throat cancer.
Sorry to hear about your grandad, they realy are an amazing generation who we owe a huge debt.
I have obtained a copy of what passed for the ships log from the public record office and it is a fascinating read.
I am not sure if there is any way to get in touch but I would be happy to share any of the info I have including a short diary gramps kept during his early days at sea.
